Atrium Publishing House

Atrium Förlag is an independent publishing house founded in 2006. We are based in Umeå – the former European Capital of Culture (2014) – in the north of Sweden, and our publishing house is one of few in Scandinavia with a combined interest in literature for children and young people, as well as the field of film and theatre. We publish high quality books, with a list that is so far over 100 titles strong, including translations from various languages.

The focus on film and theatre – subjects often neglected on the Swedish book market – has resulted in published screenplays by filmmakers Andrei Tarkovsky, Lukas Moodysson and Ruben Östlund as well as the winning short scripts from the Doris Film script competition, the diaries of Andrei Tarkovsky, the notes of Robert Bresson, interviews with and essays by Michael Haneke, selected works by Sergei Eisenstein and Tonino Guerra, a dissertation and an anthology on the films of Ingmar Bergman and plays by William Shakespeare, Alexander Pushkin, Ivan Turgenev, Tennessee Williams, Jean Cocteau, Elfriede Jelinek, Hjalmar Söderberg, Hélène Cixous, Catharine Trotter, Erland Josephson, Sara Lidman, Hjalmar Bergman, Björn Runge, Victoria Benedictsson and Alfhild Agrell, most of them including thorough prefaces by renounced film, theatre and literature scholars. We have also published a personal biography of Michelangelo Antonioni by Stig Björkman, the richly illustrated memoirs of the legendary production manager Allan Ekelund who worked closely with several of the greats of Swedish cinema, the first-ever biography of the Swedish playwright Alfhild Agrell, written by professor Ingeborg Nordin Hennel, a collection of Agrell’s letters to Ellen Key, filmtheoretical essays by professor Astrid Söderbergh Widding and several novels that have been made into films, among them an edition of Shusaku Endo’s novel Silence with preface by Martin Scorsese.

In our list of previous publications of children’s and youth literature, one may find classics by E.B. White, Aleksei Tolstoy and Jan Brzechwa, award-winning masterpieces by Sonya Hartnett, charming and thought-provoking picture books by acclaimed authors and illustrators such as Robert Munsch, Michael Martchenko, Coralie Saudo, Kris Di Giacomo, Lorenza Farina, Sonia M.L. Possentini, Maja Kastelic, Serge Bloch, Antonis Papatheodoulou, Iris Samartzi, Jean Jullien, Rébecca Dautremer, Agnès de Lestrade, Valeria Docampo, Anastasia Qarawani, Gabriel Evans, Heinz Janisch, Jo Ellen Bogart, Veera Salmi, Matti Pikkujämsä and Jenny Berggren, the existential and fun short Conversation with a Chocolate Cake by Martin Page, modern fairytales by the Estonian storytelling wiz Andry Ervald, several collections of Swedish literary fairytales as well as the semi-autobiographical children’s book trilogy by Frida Åslund, one of Astrid Lindgren’s predecessors. Furthermore we are proud to be the Swedish publisher of the acclaimed british authors Jenny Valentine, Steven Camden and Siobhan Dowd. Our intention is to continue to focus on both classic and contemporary authors. We have a close collaboration with bookstores and libraries, and put a great emphasis on increasing the knowledge and understanding of children’s literature, especially among those working with children and young people.
